We were up bright and early (too early as it happened), ready to tackle the Crossing. We got off to a good start, with photo ops back towards Mt Ruapehu. The pace was good, but unfortunately we were marching right into a cloud. A big wet cloud, sitting in between Mt Ngarahoe and Mt Tongariro. Still, spirits were high, if anything mist on 'Mt Doom' added to the atmosphere. It wouldn't have been surprising to see an Orc appear around the corner.
We ploughed on past the 'viewpoints' - the red crater looked a bit grey, the emerald lakes were slightly bluey grey and we missed the blue lake altogether. Still, it was a good walk! And good company! We stopped at the last hut for a late lunch
out of the wind and rain and then, because we were about 2 hours ahead of schedule (presumably you're supposed to stop and take a lot more photos), we sat by the fire in the hut and dried out our gear, before the final tramp down.Back at base camp, we went for another of Geordie's recommendations, the Park's Steak with balsa
mic mushrooms. Along with the free beer, it made a fine end to the day! Shame we didn't see much, but we enjoyed it, and could see how it would be an amazing experience on a clear day. We might try to get to the Crossing again before we go to Aussie. If not - it's on that 'list of things to come back for'.
